We provide cancer patients access to Pilates and Yoga classes during their cancer journey to help maintain physical activity levels.
Pilates and Yoga exercises can: improve physical strength, flexibility and posture, enhance mental awareness, reduce fatigue and help regain confidence in getting back to exercise after a cancer diagnosis.
I thoroughly enjoyed my Pilates classes and looked forward to them every week. The 1:1 assessment before joining the group class was invaluable as it helped with confidence. The instructor was aware of your capabilities therefore you felt confident in doing the exercises that were created for you. The instructors’ attention throughout the class was amazing and this also led to greater confidence when exercising. It also meant that continuing the exercises at home was not a problem as you had been shown the correct way to do them.
Attending regular Pilates classes has given me contact with others when I was feeling very isolated, it has taught me to take time for myself away from stresses of life and has helped me to gain confidence again in my body and to strive to improve my fitness and flexibility. The instructor Gwyneth was so supportive toward me when I was really at my lowest point. Attending the class each week and hearing the calm, assured encouragement made me feel positive about my progress and about what I could achieve in the future. I am profoundly grateful for their support to me at the worst time of my life.
I have enjoyed my Yoga sessions with Action Cancer immensely. After my first week I just could not wait to go back. Experiencing this type of yoga has increased my energy levels and given me motivation to do the breathing exercises at home. I feel more positive and when under pressure I relate to what I have learnt in class with Maggie. I feel happier in my daily routine – these yoga lessons have really helped me in my recovery of cancer and my self worth has also improved.
